I am using this book as a journal. It has a soft cover. Not sure what the cover is coated with, but the outer side feels like a soft leather to me. The title page indicates, "This Journal Belongs to:" All of the subsequent pages are lined (black lines) with the exception of a couple of blank pages in the back. I love the design, feel, and size of this journal.
